The Lord of the Rings Online's Update 50, The Wolves of Mordor, went live on Wednesday, October 28. It sends level-160 characters into three new regions of Mordor and adds two systems with longer-term ambitions: a shared build system called Survival Instincts and Neighbours who can move into your homestead. [1]

Three new regions and a lot of quests

The story starts with the Ranger Orthonn outside the Minas Tirith (Midsummer) stables. You must be level 160 to begin; Standing Stone recommends, but does not require, finishing The Song of Waves and Wind first. [1]

The regions are Heledhris, black hills scorched by Mount Doom; Parth Rhavas, plains home to wolf-revering Easterlings; and Nan Ogol, misty depths ruled by were-wolves. Standing Stone counts more than 200 quests, 90 deeds and 30 missions. [1] For a game with an audience that tends to play for the journey, that is a healthy amount of road.

Survival Instincts: a build system for every class

The more interesting addition is Survival Instincts, a progression system available to every class. Players collect Tactics, Lessons, Skills and Enhancements from Draugardh and combine them into builds. Builds carry across all of a player's characters on the same server. [1]

That last detail is the smart part. Many long-running MMOs add a system that makes the main character stronger and leaves alts further behind. Sharing builds across a server's characters points the other way, toward rewarding the player rather than one character. If the system has depth, it could make experimenting with a second class less of a commitment.

Standing Stone lists a known issue: the Survival Instincts panel does not yet show current or available trait configurations. [1] That is an awkward bug for a system built around configuring traits, and one to watch in the first patches.

Neighbours give the homestead a pulse

Neighbours are companions who move into your homestead and become friends through stories, gifts and daily missions. Each has twenty personality traits and a dynamic mood system. [1] Housing in many MMOs is a place to store trophies. A few residents with moods and missions could make it somewhere you visit for a reason.

There is a commercial detail attached. The Ultimate Fan Bundle includes "immediate access to all 4 Neighbours," alongside cosmetics, a steed, a pet, bank slots and Virtue experience. [1] That suggests other players will unlock Neighbours more gradually. It is not a power advantage, but it is worth knowing before you buy an edition based on the homestead features.

Gear, Virtues and class changes

Level-160 Legendary items can now reach item level 570, and new lootbox and Delving gear for level-160 characters scales from 567 to 569. The Virtue cap rises to 104 for characters level 158 and above. [1]

Class changes are targeted rather than sweeping. Burglars can now Burgle trolls and giants. Lore-masters must spend a charge to activate empowered Ancient Master skills, and charges now come after five critical hits instead of six. Wardens in Red Dawn stance no longer lose their fire and light oils when using Rohirrim mounted skills, and the Sorceress gets more Burning Devotion damage and an Ignite fix. [1]

Ettenmoors players also get notable Monster Play changes: higher base critical protection, much smaller Gruel bonuses, longer-lasting but pricier food and potions, and a new reward trader. [1]

Our take

Update 50 does the expected thing well: a large new region with plenty of quests for players at the level cap. Its long-term value depends on the two new systems. If Survival Instincts is deep and alt-friendly, and Neighbours make housing part of a daily routine, this update could change how veterans spend their evenings, not just where.

Playable demo: The Lord of the Rings Online is free to play on Steam and has no separate demo. [2] The Wolves of Mordor content is sold in editions; check the official store for what each includes.
