Frozen Trail, released October 8, is described by Embark as ARC Raiders’ biggest update since launch. It opens Pendola Pass, adds new ARC enemies and weapons, and brings a substantial list of changes to how players develop a Raider and progress through rewards.
The new map is the headline. The more consequential change for players who already know the Rust Belt may be the systems wrapped around it: the skill tree has been reworked, the Outpost gains a Research Bench and additional upgrade path, and the old Raider Deck progression has been moved into a Legacy Pass.
A new frontier, with more to learn
Pendola Pass introduces a colder region with its own threats, including the Bully, Skulker and Hydra. The update also adds two weapons, new items such as a grappling hook and tether launcher, more quests, craftable Outpost furniture and new map conditions. These additions give returning squads reasons to explore unfamiliar routes instead of repeating their first comfortable extraction path.
Exploration only works if the tools supporting it feel useful. The revamped skill tree is intended to provide more meaningful choices and better express a player’s style. Embark says the previous version was not doing enough to define playstyles, so it has replaced or altered weaker skills and restructured some decisions into clearer branches.
That is a good goal for an extraction game. When players make choices about stamina, carrying capacity, survival or combat, those decisions should change how a raid feels. If most builds still converge on the same set of obvious picks, the tree may look larger without offering much more agency.
The Reward Pass question
Frozen Trail also replaces Cred with Reward Points and introduces a new Reward Pass system. Players can work on one pass at a time; existing Raider Decks have been moved to a Legacy Pass, and previously earned rewards are retained. The new pass contains Free and Premium tracks.
This is a notable shift because progression systems shape what players do between raids. A clear track can help people set goals, but it can also turn a flexible collection of challenges into a checklist that competes for attention. The Legacy Pass at least gives existing decks a place to remain rather than simply deleting old progression.
The update’s first free-play window ran from October 8 through October 12. That timing gave new players access during the launch of Frozen Trail, but a limited trial is only an introduction. The more durable question is whether new Raiders will keep playing after the promotional window and whether the old audience finds enough new depth to return.
Progression data will be worth watching alongside map impressions. A player can enjoy Pendola Pass and still decide the new pass structure asks too much attention between raids. Another may prefer having a visible track and a clear set of goals. Those experiences are not mutually exclusive, which is why the studio will need to pay attention to how often people change passes, which rewards they pursue and whether the new skill options show up in different builds.
Our take
Frozen Trail gives ARC Raiders a strong set of reasons to come back: a new environment, a skill tree overhaul and more possibilities around the Outpost. We especially like that Embark is treating the skill tree as a space for playstyle rather than a quiet collection of percentage boosts.
The progression redesign deserves close attention. A Reward Pass can organize goals, but the game should still make a raid worth playing when there is no milestone blinking on the screen. The best extraction loops make the trip itself memorable: a tense encounter, an unexpected alliance, a risky detour, or the relief of reaching the elevator with the right loot.
Frozen Trail’s success will depend on whether the new systems reinforce that feeling. If they give players more ways to approach the world, the update could deepen the game. If they mostly add another layer to manage, Pendola Pass may be the only part that feels truly fresh.
