Clarification — October 23, 2026: Pearl Abyss’s English announcement describes a new level 75 cap after previously uncapped leveling. Its Japanese update notes also use “70 to 75” wording. We have clarified this article to avoid presenting 70 as an unambiguous previous hard cap.
Black Desert’s October progression update sets a character level cap of 75 and changes how Combat EXP is earned. Pearl Abyss says the goal is to make character levels a more meaningful part of growth, with additional stats for levels above 70 and revisions to the experience system.
That is a notable change for a game where advancement has often been understood through a mix of gear, grind spots, skills and account-wide systems. A level cap can make progress easier to read, but it also brings back a difficult question for a veteran MMO: how much should a number matter after players have spent years building a character?
Making an old progression bar visible again
The update includes revised Combat EXP requirements, level-based limits on experience gained from monsters, and clearer information about experience in Monster Zone Info. Pearl Abyss also added a Combat Secret Book that can award Combat EXP after selected activities, including bosses and PvP. The package is intended to give players more routes and clearer feedback as they progress.
Those presentation changes matter. A player can tolerate a long climb more easily when the game explains what contributes to it and when each step brings a recognizable reward. If EXP is hidden behind poorly explained thresholds, grinding can feel like repeatedly pressing a button on a machine that refuses to show its settings.
At the same time, a level cap does not automatically create a new endgame. If the most efficient path is still a narrow loop that players have already mastered, the new levels may become a bigger number attached to familiar hours. The important question is whether activities that were already part of a player’s routine now contribute to a meaningful character goal.
The MMO’s balancing act
MMOs have to give long-term players reasons to keep investing without making new or returning players feel permanently behind. A new level cap can work as a catch-up opportunity if the experience curve is approachable and rewards are useful. It can become another wall if power gained at each level is required to participate in the content players actually want to play.
Black Desert’s approach combines a level 75 ceiling with a broad EXP revision. That distinction matters, but players will need time to learn how the new requirements feel across different activities. It is too early to declare whether the experience changes shorten the grind overall or shift it into other systems.
The level 75 bonuses also touch class balance. Any additional health, attack, damage reduction or evasion can affect PvP matchups as well as PvE progression. That means a system intended to make levels more meaningful needs careful tuning across the game’s many classes.
For players in the higher levels, the update changes the milestones ahead. For newer characters, the revised experience curve and clearer displays could be more important than the level 75 endpoint. We should be careful not to treat the leveling rework as equally relevant to everyone: a change that excites a dedicated grinder may feel distant to a player still learning regions, gear and class skills.
Our take
We like the effort to make character growth clearer and to let more activities contribute toward it. A leveling system feels better when it recognizes the different ways people spend time in an MMO instead of treating one monster loop as the only serious option.
Still, Black Desert does not need more grind for its own sake. It needs levels to provide goals players can understand and rewards that matter without making everyone else feel obsolete. If the new cap gives returning players a satisfying next step, it could give an old system new purpose. If it mainly extends the climb, the update will have changed the destination without improving the trip.
