Overwatch 2 Season 5, “A Grim Doctrine,” began October 6 with a new support hero, a Halloween event and another step toward the conclusion of the Reign of Talon story. Blizzard is also bringing revised versions of eligible Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15 back into play.
That mix is easy to read as a seasonal content bundle. It may be more useful to view it as two separate tests: whether Overwatch can keep its ongoing story meaningful while adding a new hero, and whether a return of old rewards gives players better access without making the current season feel less special.
Doctrine and the next story turn
Blizzard describes Doctrine as a new support hero linked to Doomfist’s past. The character’s escape from Grímsvötn sets up the final chapter of the Reign of Talon narrative, a story the studio says has been in development for years. The season also includes a limited-time event where heroes return with changing powers after each death, plus a new way for Sombra to take on a different role.
New characters are most valuable when they change how a team thinks about a fight, not only when they add another set of abilities to memorize. A support hero can alter the pace of an engagement, create a new counter, or make a previously awkward team composition feel viable. Those effects are best judged in live matches over time; the announcement alone cannot establish how balanced Doctrine will be.
The story component has a different job. After several seasons of buildup, players need to feel that the narrative is moving toward a payoff rather than adding another cliffhanger to the queue. Season 5’s framing gives Blizzard an opportunity to make the larger conflict feel connected to what players actually do in the game.
Old Battle Passes, new reasons to play
The Unvaulted Pass system lets players progress one older pass alongside the current Battle Pass. Blizzard says players can resume previous progress, including progress on the free track, and that an acquired Unvaulted Pass remains available permanently. That gives lapsed players a way to pursue rewards they missed without abandoning the current season.
It is a player-friendly idea in principle. A live-service game can make past rewards feel less like a one-time purchase trap and more like a library of goals. At the same time, a returning catalog can increase the amount of competing progression players are expected to manage. The option to work on both tracks is generous, but it also raises the question of whether everyday play starts to feel like reward maintenance.
The details matter: which passes return, what is revised, what remains unavailable, and whether progress can be made at a reasonable pace. Players should not need to treat every match like a second job to take advantage of a feature meant to reduce regret.
There is a preservation angle here too. Seasonal rewards can be a point of pride, but when a game has years of timed cosmetics, new players face a wall of unavailable history. A return system makes some of that history visible again, though Blizzard has not promised that every prior reward will return. The policy around exclusions and future rotations may matter almost as much as the first unvaulted selection.
Our take
We like the idea of giving players another route to older rewards, particularly when prior progress carries forward. That is more respectful of people’s time than pretending every cosmetic must remain permanently out of reach to create urgency.
But the return of old content should support the present game rather than replace the feeling of a new season. Doctrine and the narrative ending need to give players something to discuss after they unlock a few familiar items. If Season 5 can pair a compelling hero with a satisfying story turn, the pass system becomes a useful bonus. If not, the season risks making its biggest headline about recycled rewards.
