ATOM RPG has a fresh reason to reopen an old save, but it is worth reading more than the destination on the ticket. Plague Island, released on October 15, is a paid story expansion for the original game. It arrived alongside the finalized 1.2.1 update, with another hotfix following on October 20. That makes this both a new expedition and a changed set of practical conditions for returning parties. [1][2][3]

The distinction matters. The island is add-on content; the broader update is a separate part of the original game’s maintenance and improvement. Players do not need to confuse the two to understand why either might interest them.

A new place with an old-fashioned warning

Plague Island sends the party from an airfield near Fogelevka toward a separate map, where a settlement is facing a mysterious disease. The DLC describes new quests and locations, a pre-war bunker, additional travel options and access to Special Armor. [2]

AtomTeam’s release announcement says the journey becomes accessible after bribing a way into Krasnoznamenny, but warns that lower-level characters and smaller parties may find it dangerous. [1] Being allowed to go is not the same as being comfortably prepared to stay.

That is an appealing distinction for a party RPG. A destination can become part of the player’s plans before it becomes the obvious next step. The preparation then gives existing equipment, companions and unfinished business a fresh purpose.

Check what your old equipment now expects

The 1.2.1 release notes cover equipment and interface changes, including attachment information and ammunition compatibility. One particularly practical instruction is to eject old or incompatible ammunition from an affected weapon, then reload with the correct type. [1]

Before a difficult trip, it is sensible to inspect the party’s weapons, compatible supplies and basic travel preparations. That is ordinary preparation rather than a tested build recommendation; the appropriate choices will depend on the save and the party.

The hotfix changes the return trip too

The October 20 hotfix addresses companions equipping Special Armor and makes armor upgrades use the party member with the best Crafting skill. It also adds fuel and ammunition supplies, improves island/mainland travel and corrects several island issues. Those are developer-reported fixes, not a guarantee that every save is free of problems. [3]

The crafting change is especially relevant to party planning. A specialist’s skill can matter to a group upgrade without requiring the player to treat every companion as a separate self-sufficient crafter. More dependable travel also matters when an expedition is meant to connect back to an existing campaign.

Together, these changes make the update worth considering beyond the promise of another map.

Keep the current update separate from future plans

AtomTeam previously discussed bringing co-op to the original ATOM RPG in a later update. That announcement explicitly excluded it from 1.2.1. [4] It should not be counted among the features available simply because Plague Island and the finalized update are now out.

For players interested in returning today, the concrete package is clearer: a paid new story destination, changes to the underlying game, and a follow-up hotfix addressing equipment and travel. Check which part you need, give the party’s supplies another look, and treat the island’s warning seriously.
